Volkswagen: the end of the V8 TDI

The Touareg is preparing to abandon the V8 TDI, an engine that it had recently been offering. Instead, Volkswagen will highlight the plug-in hybrid.

Volkswagen will soon withdraw the V8 TDI from the Touareg's offer. The brand has indeed just launched in Germany a special series called V8 Last Edition, limited to 400 copies, which will be available in the coming days.

This engine will, therefore, have made a quick passage under the hood of the third generation of the Touareg! It has indeed joined the catalog of the large German SUV in 2019. At the time, we were also surprised to see the return of such a proposal, thinking that the Dieselgate would have encouraged VW to abandon it. , but also the fact that brands are increasingly rationalizing ranges by erasing little-sold proposals.

As a reminder, this V8 TDI is a 4.0-liter unit that develops 421 hp and delivers a monstrous torque of 900 Nm. It is not particularly advantageous in terms of CO2, since it releases according to the WLTP standard from 242 to 260 g / km of CO2! This is also as much as the 340 hp V6 gasoline.

The end of the V8 TDI does not mark the end of diesel for the Touareg, since the V6 3.0 TDI of 231 and 286 hp remains. Instead of the V8, Volkswagen intends to highlight a new version of the Touareg, the sporty R. It receives a strong rechargeable hybrid gasoline engine of 462 hp. Thanks to its 14.1 kWh battery which can do several tens of kilometers on electric power, the R should avoid the penalty!
